A Dizzying Number of Hippos Gathered at This Spot in Tanzania—Why?

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) lately shared a photograph of a river in Tanzania full of enormous, grey river rocks . . . besides they’re not river rocks, they’re hippos. The sheer variety of hippos within the photograph, although, is surprising. The animals are jammed in like sardines. However why are so a lot of them there?

“Sure, these are all hippos,” wrote WCS in its Instagram submit sharing the photograph. “Tanzania’s Katavi Nationwide Park, the third largest park within the nation [. . .] options [the] well-developed Miombo Woodland and seasonally inundated pans—areas that present refuge to spectacular concentrations of hippos and buffalo.”

Through the dry season, hippos in Tanzania’s Katavi Nationwide Park collect collectively in giant numbers at our bodies of water. In circumstances just like the one pictured, a whole bunch of hippos collect in a single spot, which seemingly results in some disputes, given these animals’ territorial nature.
