Philadelphia Zoo has introduced 4 critically endangered Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoise hatchlings born to a mother that’s almost 100 years previous. The zoo says the hatchlings are the zoo’s first in its 150-year historical past.

“These infants are huge deal for just a few causes,” Philadelphia Zoo wrote in an Instagram put up sharing a video of the mother and her infants. “Their dad and mom, Mommy and Abrazzo, are the 2 oldest animals on the Zoo, estimated to be round 100 years previous. [. . .] [Mommy has] turn into the oldest first-time mother of her species! These latest additions characterize a brand new genetic lineage and a few much-needed assist to the species’ inhabitants.”
How unbelievable that this species has the longevity to supply offspring after a century of residing! The hatchlings are very cute, too. On its Instagram web page, the zoo shared footage of the infants hatching from their eggs, bobbing their heads adorably, and strolling clumsily to nibble on some lettuce. Much more tortoises might hatch from Mommy’s clutch in coming weeks.
